Storm Damage ABCs: Your First 3 Steps to Roof Restoration

The storm has passed, and the skies are bright and clear, but your roofing system has sustained some amount of damage in the aftermath. So, what should be your next move? Start the restoration process by following these storm damage ABCs:

A – Assess the Storm Damage

Before doing so, however, you should wait until the storm has waned. After all, safety should be the first priority. Once it is safe to go outside, you can proceed with your initial storm damage assessment. Watch where you step – slip, trip and fall hazards are common following a major weather event. And, if you see downed power lines, put in a call to your electric company.

It’s also important that you never inspect your roof by climbing up there yourself. Instead, use a pair of binoculars to survey the extent of storm damage, which may include exposed sections on the roof where the asphalt shingles are missing, large openings created by a fallen tree or wind-blown debris, and torn and damaged gutters. Document the storm damage via photos and videos, and then call a roofer for a comprehensive exam.

B – Begin Provisional Fixes

You’ll want to make sure no further property damage occurs, so any valuables should be removed from the affected area immediately. Larger items, such as built-in furniture and appliances, should be covered by plastic sheets so they remain safe from leaks. And, speaking of leaks, you might want to place buckets under them. You should also turn to Renovation Team for emergency roof repairs. Our quick response team will be there in a jiffy and tarp any holes on your roof to prevent further leaks.

C – Call Your Insurance Provider

Most storm damage typically warrants an insurance claim. That’s why, after documenting the damage and putting in a temporary fix, you should place a call to your insurance company.
