How to Get Your Home Ready for Roof Installation Day

The hardest part of getting a new roofing system is in choosing the right kind of roofing material, the contractor to install it and securing financing for it. If you’ve done all of this, then all that’s left is preparing your home for installation day.

Clean the Yard

You need to clear as much space in your yard as possible. Materials will be delivered ahead of installation day and will need temporary storage space. Not all homes have a storage shed, and storing the roofing materials in the yard will help eliminate the need to move the shingles to the work areas. In addition to materials, equipment, such as dumpsters for containing discarded roofing, will also be delivered.

Start by clearing the driveway and the yard of anything that can be moved or stored. This includes garden décor, loose toys and freestanding gazebos. Putting this task at the top of your list will give your contractors more space to move around for the other tasks. It is also good practice when preparing for other exterior home improvements.

Prepare the House

Roof installation generates a lot of dust. To prepare your home for it, cover your furniture, electronics and valuables with dust covers. Set your expectations that you and your family will not be able to use them until after the new roof is finished. You may also need to clear items in the attic if they will get in the way of roof installation.

Arrange Temporary Accommodations

Staying at home during roof installation is not a good idea. All the noise, dust and the installers going back and forth would be stressful to your family, particularly to your kids and pets. If you work from home, you probably won’t be able to concentrate. Once you have confirmed the roof installation date, arrange temporary accommodations, be it at a relative’s or at a nearby hotel.
